payment for poor artists

Thanks to AJ for the above link to a story in the Financial Times that should interest all American artists. The question is how to support artists. The EU model is to pay them. I can't live for free, so why should others make money off of what I make. There is another concept that is working in Canada. Pay artists for exhibiting their work. Much like the royalties paid to musicians when their work is performed visual artists should expect compensation for the viewing pleasure the public has. This is different than the idea that artists should pay to have their work juried into an exhibit.
